Job Summary
Assists the supervisor and custodial crew in performing custodial duties. Ensures a safe and clean environment through assignment of work to custodial staff, inspection of premises and performance of custodial tasks as needed. Notifies management concerning need for major repairs or additions to lighting, heating, and ventilating equipment. Serves as lead worker while overseeing custodial work performed by others. Trains and monitors performance of custodial personnel.
Essential Duties:
- Coordinates and assigns work orders, and assists in daily workload of custodians during daily operations and events. Assists in project oversight as needed, working with management. Provides input to manager on hiring and performance evaluations. Oversees scheduling and workflow. Ensures all work performed conforms to accepted standards, practices, and codes.
- Maintains work order system for custodial department. Assigns, schedules, and closes out work orders for daily maintenance, preventative maintenance, cleaning, repairing, and event needs of college.
- Orders and maintains an inventory of tools, supplies, and equipment for cleaning and maintenance of the college.
- Secures information and specifications for bids while working with staff and vendors.
- Performs all duties of custodian. Performs general cleaning of all buildings, moving of office furniture, and the set-up, take down, and clean-up of events. Responds to emergencies when needed.
- Coordinates office moves and physical reorganizations of offices. Coordinates the storage and disposal of surplus office equipment.
- Instructs and monitors tasks of custodial crew, including appropriate documentation.
- Responds to requests for service in moving furniture and equipment or maintenance of facilities
- Ensures cleanliness and maintenance of various floor surfaces including stripping, refinishing and buffing of hard floors and shampooing and extracting of carpets.
- Removes and disposes of bio-hazardous waste, including site cleanup.

- Trains new and current custodians.
- Instructs and monitors tasks of part-time staff and work-study students.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Two years of experience as a custodian in an institutional or educational setting
- Beginner (limited) working knowledge of word processing and email applications, preferably within the Microsoft Office Suite
- Valid, current driver's license and ability to be insured by the college insurance carrier. Must have at least three (3) years of driving history.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis, occasionally above shoulder height.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience as a custodian in a community college setting
Additional Requirements:
Must obtain within 60 days of starting work (depending upon availability of class):
- Blood Borne Pathogen Training
- Emergency and Safety Procedures Training
- Gas Dispensing Training
- HAZMAT Awareness Level Training
- MHCC Defensive Driving Course
Working Conditions:
This is an on-site position. Work is performed with frequent exposure to hazardous materials, such as chemicals and bio-hazardous waste, weather, noise or potentially dangerous situations. Frequent physical demands such as driving, walking and standing for long periods of time; moderate to excessive lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of heavy objects; and climbing, crawling and repetitive hand and wrist motions can be expected.
