Job Summary

This role supports the regulatory and operational risk management efforts within the Credit Union’s Lending Operations department, providing guidance on various risk areas, including vendor management, regulatory compliance, quality management, business continuity, operations, and audits. Reporting to the Director of Consumer Lending & Loan Operations, this position helps manage risk by developing procedures with effective controls, monitoring performance, analyzing results, and reporting key risk and control issues. The role also collaborates with the Credit Union’s risk functions and contributes to the development of action plans and remediation strategies for addressing identified risks. Additionally, this position participates in strategic enterprise-wide projects aimed at proactively identifying and mitigating risks, while supporting the Credit Union’s overall enterprise risk management strategy.

Essential Functions

  • Leverage expertise in regulatory and operational risk management to develop procedures and effective controls that ensure the department’s compliance and mitigate various risks.
  • Collaborate with management to establish and refine department-wide quality control processes that ensure optimal efficiency and risk mitigation.
  • Support Lending Operations by assisting with second-line compliance processes, including third-party risk management, business continuity planning, risk assessments, and issue resolution.
  • Work cross-functionally with departments like Compliance, Legal, and Enterprise Risk Management to stay informed on evolving regulatory and operational risk requirements, ensuring the Lending Operations department remains aligned.
  • Develop risk and control assessments that accurately reflect the department’s exposure to regulatory, operational, and other identified risks, while leading efforts to create Risk & Controls Self Assessments for Lending Operations processes.
  • Foster a culture of proactive risk identification by encouraging the documentation and reporting of process weaknesses, conducting root cause analysis, and partnering with business unit leadership to design and implement effective remediation strategies.
  • Contribute to change management efforts by conducting thorough research, analysis, and preparing clear communications for management on the impacts of change and required actions.
  • Champion a risk management culture, actively advocating for the identification and mitigation of risks, ensuring that all levels of the organization are engaged in protecting the business.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • In-depth understanding of the systems and processes that drive daily Lending Operations activities.
  • Eagerness to collaborate across departments, engaging with subject matter experts to learn key functions and build critical internal partnerships, as well as manage external vendor relationships.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of credit union policies and procedures, particularly those related to applicable laws and regulations affecting the business unit.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to conduct thorough analysis of complex issues, manage risks, and make informed decisions independently.
  • Skilled in navigating all levels of the organization, with excellent project management capabilities to drive initiatives forward.
  • Proven ability to influence processes, measuring the effectiveness and impact of changes on the organization.
  • Comprehensive understanding of banking and financial services principles, alongside relevant regulatory controls.
  • Proficient in facilitating or participating in process improvement projects, adapting as the needs of the project evolve.

Qualifications

  • Preferred professional certifications include Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM), Credit Union Compliance Expert (CUCE), NAFCU Certified Compliance Officer (NCCO), Certified Enterprise Risk Professional (CERP), or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). Alternatively, candidates should demonstrate the ability to obtain relevant certification within 12 months of assuming the role, with the credit union covering reasonable preparation and testing costs.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple, complex projects independently, leading key stakeholders across the credit union to successful outcomes.
  • Strong understanding of financial institution control structures and business unit operations, enabling effective risk assessment, providing constructive challenges, and making sound recommendations.
  • 8-10 years of experience in banking or financial services, with a focus on retail operations and a high level of engagement in ERM and regulatory processes, or 3-5 years in compliance, ERM, or audit roles within a financial institution, conducting risk assessments, managing remediation, or driving process improvement initiatives.
