Job Summary and Responsibilities/Duties

Job Summary:

Provides a broad range of services to students to support recruitment, advising, and navigation of college services. Assists students in addressing barriers to attendance and provides the wrap-around and on-going supports students need to persist and successfully complete a degree or certificate in the Early Childhood Education (ECE) and Family Studies program. Connects students to on-campus and community resources, and assists students with short and long-term academic planning, admissions, enrollment, and financial aid. Supports students with interpreting college systems and in developing self-advocacy skills.

Essential Duties:

  1. Participates in outreach efforts to recruit potential students interested in pursuing an early childhood certificate or degree.
  2. Assists students with the development of long-range education plans, selection of appropriate courses, and interpretation of institutional requirements.
  3. Advises and assists students with admissions, testing and placement, registration, financial aid, and scholarship applications.
  4. Supports students from diverse academic, socio-economic and racial/ethnic backgrounds. Connects students to   internal and external resources for students experiencing family, personal, or economic crises which may impact academic performance.
  5. Collaborates across college departments, workforce agencies, and community organizations to holistically serve historically underrepresented populations, communities of color, and low-income individuals using existing research-based practices.
  6. Facilitates information and orientation sessions for prospective and newly enrolled students 
  7. Attends relevant high school and community events to share ECE program information with potential students.
  8. Develops ECE program marketing materials with MHCC Brand and Marketing Department.
  9. Tracks student progress and effectiveness of advising supports. Compiles and submits data for quarterly report on student demographics and student status to Preschool for All managers. 
  10. Purchases supplies for student support, maintains and submits accurate records to finance and grant departments.

Additional Duties:

1. Applies knowledge of college and community support services and facilitates referrals to faculty and resources when appropriate. 

2. Responds to inquiries utilizing various modes of communication (i.e., email, phone, Zoom appointments).

3. Acts as a college representative when visiting high schools, post-secondary institutions, agencies, business and industry, and professional organizations.

5. Performs all other related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, child and family studies, social work, or related field
  • Three (3) years of work experience in the early childhood education field
  • Knowledge of current computer software packages including intermediate-level knowledge of word processing, database, presentation and email applications, and beginning-level knowledge of spreadsheet applications, preferably within the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Current driver’s license, insurance and access to reliable automobile during work hours for transportation to off-campus sites. Must have at least three (3) years of driving history.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in higher education and/or student services in an advising, workforce development, or instructional role Bilingual in English and Spanish, Vietnamese, or Arabic

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to understand and apply the college’s interpretation of FERPA
  • Ability to interpret and apply institutional policies and procedures (e.g., limited/restricted entry and transfer program requirements) to assist students in making sound educational and career decisions.
  • Strong attention to details and deadlines
  • Knowledge and ability to apply the application of placement and achievement testing philosophy to academic advising
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including active listening skills 

 

Working Conditions and Important Information

 

Working Conditions:

This position is primarily on site but may be eligible for remote work on an intermittent basis. Any remote work requires prior approval and must comply with MHCC Remote Work policies and administrative regulations. Remote work must be within the states of Oregon or Washington.

Work is typically performed in a college campus building working with students, faculty and staff. Occasional strain to the eyes while working with a computer terminal. Occasional local travel and evening and weekend hours expected.

Physical Demands: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a college learning center, classroom, lab or similar setting; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other general office and instructional equipment and technologies; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; kneeling, bending at the waist, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies; lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying office and instructional technologies and equipment, supplies and materials weighing up to 10 pounds; hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read, prepare and assure the accuracy of documents.
