Job Summary

The City of Salem Fire Department is seeking motivated,
EMT-Basic for 34 Single Role positions.
What you will do:
EMTs work under the supervision of a Fire Captain. Incumbents in this position may provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel. The Single Role EMT-B performs all work consistent with the EMT-B certification level as specified by the Oregon Health Authority. Other duties include training, public education, equipment and station maintenance, and other related assignments.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check, which may include a psychological assessment, and drug test (including marijuana).
  • Must have an Oregon Driver's license, or the ability to obtain an Oregon license within 30 days of residency and meet the City of Salem's driving standards.
  • Oregon EMT-Basic or, National Registry certification as an EMT-Basic and the ability to qualify for State of Oregon reciprocity, or possession of EMT-B from another state and be able to qualify for State of Oregon reciprocity per the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) (ORS 682 and OAR 333-265) by date of hire.
  • Current CPR certification or equivalent.

Compensation:
Employees hired as Single Role EMTs (SRE) or Single Role Paramedics (SRP) will receive salaries within the pay range specified for their job classifications, as outlined in the pay schedule. Effective January 1, 2026, each pay step in the salary schedule for all SRE and SRP positions will increase by 3%. Additionally, SRE and SRP employees will receive credit for prior experience as an EMT or Paramedic at another agency. Your previous experience will be credited at a 1:1 ratio, meaning for every year of experience, you will be placed on the corresponding salary step, rounding to the next step. For example, if you have worked for 3 years as an EMT or Paramedic at another agency, you will be placed at Step 5 of the salary schedule.Salary increases will occur at regular intervals based on your years of service.Step 1: 0-6 months of experience, Step 2: 7-12 months,Step 3: 13-24 months, Step 4: 25-36 months,Step 5: 37+ months of experience.
To ensure competitive pay, annual adjustments will also be made to maintain at least a 5% difference between each step in the pay scale.

July 1, 2025 Schedule:
EMTs and Paramedics will have two possible work schedules:
40-hour schedule: This involves working four 10-hour days each week.
42-hour schedule: This consists of working 24 hours straight, followed by 72 hours off, for a total of 8 shifts per month.

The hiring process for single-role positions in the Salem Fire Department will potentially involve multiple new hire academies. Due to this, employee start dates may vary. However, all employees hired into these roles will have their seniority, Paid Time Off (PTO) benefits, and probationary period begin on July 1, 2025, based on their performance during the hiring process.

During the academy, employees will be paid at Step 1 on a part-time basis until June 30, 2025. On July 1, 2025, employees will be evaluated and placed on the appropriate pay step. If any employee is assigned to full-time work before July 1, 2025, their step placement evaluation will occur at the start of their full-time assignment.
