The City of Salem is currently hiring for a Maintenance Operator I position to work in the Public Works Department.

Learn and grow:
The Maintenance Operator I position is the entry level position for the Sanitary Collections Group. Through our internal development process our employees receive opportunities to obtain a CDL (if they don't already possess one), safety training, traffic control training, and trade skill training that over time will open the doors to compete for other positions within the work group such as:

  • Public Works Maintenance Operator II
  • Public Works Crew Leader
  • Public Works Project Leader
What you will do:
As a Maintenance Operator I, your daily duties will vary from laying mainline sanitary pipe, setting Manholes, pouring bases, grouting an adjusting existing structure, main line taps, and Manhole taps. This position will be working in confined spaces including trench entries. Duties include the operation of CCTV truck and equipment, wet out procedures, and by-pass pumping. This position also involves obtaining and processing information orally and through technology via email, GIS, IPS, Word, Excel, and in-house mapping software programs.

Additional information on job responsibilities:
  • You will be asked to do the following tasks: level pipe, setting line and grade, elevations, facilitating in all aspects of pipe laying duties and repairs, general installations and maintenance of Air release valves, Gate valve exercising and repairs. Cure in place pipe point repair operations.
  • You will be asked to run the following equipment: run jack hammers, jumping jacks, easement clearing with hydro mulcher, mini excavators, and weed eaters.
  • Schedule Requirement: successful candidate will be required to perform on-duty, standby, and overtime as scheduled/needed.

  • Position schedule is 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with occasional call back, standby and overtime may be required on a rotating basis.

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check, drug test (including marijuana),and/or physical exam.
  • Must have an Oregon Commercial Driver License (CDL) and a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards or must obtain the Oregon Class A license with a tanker endorsement six months from hire date.
  • One-year general maintenance, repair, paving, or construction experience in street right-of-way, street maintenance, public works facilities, utility systems, and public improvement. Preference will be given to experience in specific area of assignment.

The Urban Renewal Agency and the Salem Housing Authority are separate municipal corporations. The Agency contracts with the City for services and the Authority is led by the Housing Administrator within the Urban Development department.
