What will you be doing?

As an employee working within the Child Welfare Program, you will have an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Oregon's most vulnerable children and families. As a Child Welfare Supervisor 2, you will:

  • Staff Supervision: Supervise and engage staff by planning, executing, monitoring, and evaluating activities to accomplish the work of ODHS and Child Welfare.

  • Ensure Compliance: Assure that staff operate within good social work practices, state and federal laws, department policies, and procedures.

  • Training and Development: Provide general training, orientation, mentoring, consultations, and continuous review of programs and standards affecting the quality, safety, and permanency of children's lives.

  • Relationship Management: Maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, community partners, children, and families.

  • Service Decision-Making: Make decisions about the level and type of services provided to client families.

What you need to qualify

  • A bachelor's degree in human services or a field related to human services and one year of lead work, supervision, or progressively related human services experience; or

  • A bachelor's degree unrelated to human services and completion of coursework equivalent to certification consistent with Oregon Caseworker Competency and one year of lead work, supervision, or progressively related experience in human services; or

  • An associate degree and three years of human services related experience one year of which must have included lead work, supervision, or progressively related experience; or

  • An associate degree and completion of coursework equivalent to certification consistent with Oregon Caseworker Competency AND one year lead work, supervision, or progressively related experience in human services.

Essential attributes

What we are looking for:

  • Experience shifting focus in dynamic environments with changing priorities.

  • Demonstrated knowledge about crisis intervention, conflict resolution, behavior management, and the impact of trauma.

  • Experience with cross-cultural relationship-building within underrepresented communities, effectively bridging service gaps and addressing community-specific barriers.

  • Experience serving as a role model and successfully navigating emotionally charged situations, demonstrating leadership by holding difficult conversations with empathy and clarity.

  • Experience applying ODHS core values, the Child Welfare Vision for Transformation and the Oregon Safety Model.

  • Previous experience in child welfare direct service and leadership is preferred.

Working conditions

  • Your work will be conducted in offices, participant's homes, and other community sites.

  • Some remote work may be approved, this will need to be discussed with and approved by your manager.

  • This position will be primarily housed in Hood River. Occasional travel is required for attending meetings, trainings, and coverage in other district offices as needed.

  • Employee will work a flexible schedule; hours of work may fluctuate based on service needs. Occasional, non-traditional hours may be required, including evening and weekend work.

  • Employee will be on a rotating on-call schedule. The rotating on-call schedule will include evening or weekend work.

  • You will interact with a diverse range of individuals, including those who have experienced trauma and may struggle with emotional regulation. This position may involve handling stressful situations that demand rapid decision-making skills.

  • The Oregon Department of Human Services does not offer visa sponsorship. ODHS will use E-Verify to confirm that you are authorized to work in the United States.

  • A valid driver's license and acceptable driving record are required.
