Are you someone who loves working with data and creating solutions that make a real difference? We're looking for a Senior Database Administrator to join our team and help advance the County’s Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing platforms. We are focused on the successful adoption of Business Intelligence tools throughout the county. The officially supported BI tools are: SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), Tableau, and Power BI. We have On-Prem servers as well as databases in the Azure Cloud and in Snowflake.

In this role, you'll be doing more than just maintaining databases—you’ll be solving complex problems, driving innovation, and helping shape the future of how we manage and use data. You’ll work on both day-to-day production support and exciting new projects, including redesigning our Data Warehouses to run on platforms like Azure Cloud and Snowflake.

The job responsibilities include:

Database Administration and Maintenance

  • Develop large-scale databases and data warehousing.
  • Perform database architecture and develop technical standards for large-scale databases for our data warehouses (SQL Server, Azure, and Snowflake).
  • Manage and maintain SQL Server and Cloud (Azure, Snowflake, etc) databases for development, testing, and production.
  • Administer database components (e.g., tablespaces, tables, indexes) and ensure security.
  • Design, implement, and manage database backups, restoration, and recovery processes.
  • Configure network connections and manage storage requirements.
  • Develop and schedule maintenance jobs and scripts to support database activities.
  • Standardize naming conventions and oversee database migrations.
  • Provide consulting and support for IT projects involving database solutions.
  • Provide technical assistance to IT developers and users.
  • Offer guidance on SQL tuning and error debugging.
  • Assist in troubleshooting complex SQL statements and database problems.
  • Provide training as appropriate.
  • Assist with the installation of database client software.
  • Participate in data quality efforts and architecture design.
  • Migrate data between databases.
  • Participate in database SQL code walkthroughs.

Tableau Server Admin and PBIRS Server Admin

Database Performance Tuning

  • Define performance tuning goals and objectives.
  • Monitor database performance and identify bottlenecks.
  • Recommend and perform optimizations for applications, databases, I/O, and OS.
  • Participate in application system performance tests to ensure optimal performance.
  • Troubleshoot performance issues, and optimize database functionality.

Software Installation, Upgrades, and Innovation

  • Install database software, SQL Server, and Windows patches.
  • Set up server directory structures to support database administration.
  • Develop project plans for installing new software releases or patches.
  • Install and test new database software releases and patches.
  • Plan and perform database upgrades and changes (on-prem and cloud).
  • Stay updated on new trends and innovations in database technology.
  • Evaluate and participate in the purchase of third-party vendor database products or tools.
  • Provide primary or backup support for managing SQL Server and Azure Cloud environments.

To Qualify

Minimum Qualifications/Transferable Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of experience will be considered AND
  • 5 years of experience in IT development and database administration
  • Ability to pass a criminal history record check
  • The specific knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) listed below.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) for this role: 

  • Advanced knowledge of or skill in Azure Cloud (Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure SQL Database, Azure Data Lake, Azure Data Factory, Azure DevOps, Azure Boards, etc).
  • Working knowledge of or skill with Snowflake.
  • Advanced knowledge of or skill with Business Intelligence Data Marts, and Data Warehousing, including design and best practices.
  • Advanced experience working with developers to build ETLs for loading data for reporting.
  • Advanced knowledge of or skill will database logging tools (Ex: Idera, RedGate Monitor, Splunk, etc).
  • Working knowledge or skill with BI reporting platforms, functionality, and tools (Tableau and Tableau Server, Power BI and Power BI Report Server, SSRS, etc). 
  • Advanced knowledge in installing, performance tuning, maintaining, securing, and administering an on prem MS SQL Server database and Cloud environments.
  • Working knowledge in installing, performance tuning, maintaining, securing, and administering a MS Integration Services (SSIS) environment.
  • Working knowledge of security, authorization, and authentication in Microsoft Active Directory  and Azure Entra ID.
  • Working knowledge of MS SQL Server and Azure cloud backup and recovery design and implementation.
  • Basic knowledge of networking and firewall concepts.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server administration.
  • Basic knowledge of SAN/NAS Storage management and concepts.
  • Basic knowledge of virtualization technology using MS Windows Hyper-V or VMWare.
  • Basic knowledge of MS Windows Server high availability technologies Application Development, architectures, languages, and/or tools.
  • Advanced knowledge of RDBMS management tools including MS SQL Server Management Studio.
  • Working knowledge of or skill in developing on a SQL Server platform using Transact SQL (T-SQL) including stored procedures, query plans, functions, views, indexes, and triggers. 
  • Working knowledge of or skill in database modeling, data conversion, and ETL tools, such as SSIS.
  • Basic knowledge of Administrative Scripting (C#, WMI, PowerShell, Rs Utility, MSBuild).

Additional Information:

This recruitment may be used to fill full-time, part-time, temporary, limited duration and on-call positions.

 

Routine Telework: This position is designated as “routine telework,” meaning you will be working remotely (from home); a hybrid schedule also is available. As with all routine telework positions, employees may be required to come into the office on occasion. The designation of Routine Telework may be subject to change at a future time. All employees must reside in Oregon or Washington; the county cannot support ongoing telework from other locations. We are not able to sponsor H1-B visas.

 

Type of Position: This is an hourly, AFSCME Local 88 union-represented position and is eligible for overtime.

Location: This position is located in the Multnomah Building, 501 SE Hawthorne Blvd. See above for information about teleworking.

Schedule:  A variety of work schedules are available. Some examples: 

  • 5-8s: 8 hours a day Monday through Friday 
  • 4-10s: 10 hours a day Monday through Thursday 
  • 4-10s: 10 hours Tuesday through Friday 
  • 4-9-4: 9 hours a day Monday through Thursday 4 hours on Friday. Etc…

 

Serving the Public, Even During Disasters

Everyday, Multnomah County staff work together to serve as a safety net for our communities. During a disaster, this safety net becomes even more critical. All County employees have a role in serving the public during inclement weather, natural disaster, or other types of community emergency response. During these emergency responses, while typically there begins with a call for volunteers, county employees may ultimately be reassigned from their current position to a role in the emergency response in order to support the critical needs presented by our communities.
