The City of Salem is currently hiring for a Maintenance Operator II position to work in the Public Works Department, Asphalt paving section.
What you will do:
This position's focus is on the Streets Maintenance paving crew. As a Maintenance Operator II, you will routinely operate construction equipment, such as dump trucks, truck/trailer combinations, bobcats, loaders, forklifts, all sizes of street sweepers, asphalt paving machines, pavement breakers, pothole truck, crack sealers, backhoe, rollers, crane trucks, traffic control truck and/or specific equipment unique to the area of work assigned. During the wintertime snow and ice operations you will use equipment such as a snow plow/sander truck and deicer truck. This position may occasionally act as a crew leader for one day assignments and will be the primary equipment operator on job sites.

  • Position Schedule: Call back, standby and overtime may be required on a rotating basis.
    May through August
    Monday - Thursday 6:00am - 4:30pm

    September through April
    Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check, drug test (including marijuana), and physical abilities exam.
  • Must have an Oregon Class A Commercial Driver license (CDL) or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date and have a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards.
  • Two years general maintenance, repair, or construction experience in street right-of- way, public works facilities, utility systems, and public improvements.
  • Any combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skill and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
What you will bring along:
The successful candidates will have knowledge and background in the paving industry and related equipment including main line paving, asphalt overlay, asphalt trench patching, shoulder work and street maintenance within the city infrastructure. This is a great opportunity for candidates that have a Commercial Driver License (CDL) and have worked in construction trades or underground utilities installation but do not want to travel.
