Tonkon Torp LLP, a prominent, full-service law firm in Portland, Oregon, invites applications for its Director of Lawyer Development. The Director of Lawyer Development supports lawyers at the firm to do their jobs more effectively and efficiently and, as a result, provide better services to their clients. In particular, the Director of Lawyer Development:
• Provides one-on-one advice and guidance to lawyers on a range of topics to help them thrive at the Firm;
• Assists with design and implementation of programs related to mentorship, evaluations, new lawyer training, ongoing professional development, and other Firm-wide initiatives;
• Provides thorough and thoughtful onboarding to new associates and lateral attorneys to increase their likelihood for success at the Firm;
• Manages the Summer Associate program;
• Supervises the Manager of Attorney Recruiting and supports the recruiting and hiring processes;
• Designs systems related to lawyer workflow and assists when needed with implementation of those systems; and
• Proactively identifies professional development-related needs within the Firm and takes action to address them.
The qualified candidate will have:
• J.D. and strong academic record from an ABA-accredited law school;
• Law firm experience, including demonstrated partner-level work;
• Excellent communication (oral and written) skills, outstanding interpersonal skills, excellent judgment, the ability to have direct and difficult conversations, and the ability to build community and bring people together;
• High ethical standards;
• Natural curiosity, a proactive mindset, and enthusiasm for new challenges;
• Ability and willingness to routinely work in the office (this is an in-office, not remote, position).
