The Oregon Convention Center is one of the largest convention facilities in the Pacific Northwest, attracting out-of-town visitors to national conventions, tradeshows and meetings, and local people to special events. The convention center's roughly 160 employees host more than 1 million visitors each year.

The Oregon Convention Center (OCC) is looking for a Telecom and Information Systems Technician to provide and maintain telecommunications system and networking services for Oregon Convention Center (OCC) and its events, clients, and exhibitors. The primary function of OCC is to generate local revenue by hosting conventions.

An employee in this position provides planning, installation, configuration, maintenance, and support of services across multiple infrastructures for events, working closely with other departments, clients, and contractors to coordinate provided services. Systems supported and maintained include LAN infrastructure, routers, low voltage & fiber optic wiring, radio communication systems, lighting system, WiFi, servers, phone system, digital signage, and point-of-sale.

The Telecom and Information Systems Technician works with other departments to support other systems including fire alarm, IP surveillance system, access control, HVAC systems, and parking management infrastructure. The Telecom and Information Systems Technician also assists Metro IT in providing infrastructure and end-user support for agency network and phone systems within OCC.

As the Telecom and Information Systems Technician you will

  • Coordinate, install, maintain, repair, and remove telecom, Internet, and networking services for events.
  • Provide front line customer support for technology services to clients, exhibitors, and attendees.
  • Troubleshoot and provide resolutions to network-related issues.
  • Configure network settings & equipment including WiFi networks, switches, and routers.
  • Coordinate activities with clients, exhibitors, vendors, contractors, and other departments for event production.
  • Assists other departments with event installations and support.
  • Monitor and track telecom and information systems activity and revenue; reconcile and close related work orders.
  • Maintain operation and inventory of service providing materials and equipment, and make recommendations for replacement.
  • Install, configure, and maintain LAN infrastructure, routers, low voltage & fiber optic wiring, radio communication systems, WiFi, servers, digital signage, and point-of-sale infrastructure.
  • Support other systems including fire alarm, IP surveillance system, access control, lighting system, HVAC systems, VoIP (voice over IP) phone system, and parking management infrastructure.
  • Install and maintain low voltage and fiber optic wiring for all network-dependent systems in facility.
  • Perform software upgrades to network equipment at regular intervals or as needed.
  • Assist Metro IT as needed with agency network installations, upgrades, and support.
  • Provide technical support for Metro Help Desk and Systems Administrators.
  • Assist in implementation and oversight of telecom and network infrastructure related projects, including capital projects.
  • Provide guidance to and oversee the work of vendors and contractors.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and monitor inventory for facility two-way radio system.
  • Coordinate directly with vendor and manufacturer support teams for all equipment and software deployed by Technology department.
  • Ensures all applicable work is entered into the Electrical Master Permit Program

  • Proficient in methods and materials of telecommunications systems equipment and operation
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques used in maintenance and repair of networks and telephone systems and related equipment
  • Knowledge of basic physical network design and maintenance, including LAN, WAN, and related cabling
  • Ability to provide quality customer service to clients with a wide variety of technical skills
  • Ability to interpret written instructions, drawings, and/or diagrams
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task; must be organized and flexible to change course of work/projects as circumstances dictate

TO QUALIFY

Minimum qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED, and
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications systems, or
  • Any combination of education, professional, volunteer and lived experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the classification duties and responsibilities.
  • Current and valid Oregon State Limited Energy Electrical License Class B (LEB); LEA preferred
  • Ability to work various hours including weekends, evenings, and holidays

  • Current driver's license and driving record sufficient to be insured by Metro insurance carrier
  • Certified Network Administrator (CNA)
  • Other related network certifications
  • Experience with Ungerboeck software platform is preferred

COMPENSATION, BENEFITS AND REPRESENTATON
The full-salary range for this position is step # 1, $28.02 per hour to step # 7, $37.55 per hour. However, unless a candidate's qualifications justify, based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act requirements and Metro's internal equity review process, the appointment will likely be made between step # 1, $28.02 per hour to step # 7, $37.55 per hour.
