We are seeking motivated individuals who are eager to apply engineering theory and principles to address design, maintenance, and construction challenges impacting the City's infrastructure and private development.

What you will do:
The Engineering Associate will assist in the design and development of infrastructure projects under the supervision of professional engineers.

The Engineering Associate will work managing construction projects, ensuring compliance with city codes and ordinances, and supporting public infrastructure improvements. The successful candidate will play a key role in coordinating between contractors and city departments, monitoring project progress, and contributing to the development of city projects.


Job duties and responsibilities:
  • Perform entry-level to intermediate engineering work in support of various public works projects.
  • Manage small infrastructure projects from inception to completion.
  • Collaborate as part of a team to deliver large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Prepare cost estimates, maintain project schedules, and track progress on construction projects.
  • Assist in the design of infrastructure projects under supervision.
  • Attend neighborhood and public meetings to assist with finding solutions and accord when public improvements conflict with the public.
  • Coordinate actions between the City and contractors to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Maintain accurate project records, track changes, and compile detailed reports.
  • Research, investigate, perform computations, analyze costs, and recommend designs to produce preliminary and final project concepts and documents.
  • Prepare technical reports, project specifications, and official correspondence.
  • Perform engineering review of plans and specifications for demonstrating compliance with code requirements and engineering standards.
  • Inspect projects, equipment installations, and construction work to verify compliance with contracts, codes, and regulations.

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field, or ability to obtain a Bachelor's degree within six months of hire, or any combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
  • Possession of an Engineering Intern (EI)/Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate or be able to obtain within one-year of appointment to position.
  • Pass the pre-employment background check.
  • Possess an Oregon Driver license and a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards.

What you will bring along:
  • Experience developing project concepts through research and investigation;
  • Experience reviewing engineering plans to ensure compliance with engineering standards and code requirements;
  • Experience performing engineering computations, analyze project costs and benefits, and recommend design criteria;
  • Experience producing preliminary and final designs and modify designs based on professional engineering review;
  • Experience supporting the management of construction projects by preparing cost estimates, maintaining schedules, coordinating between the City and contractors, monitoring project progress, maintaining records, and compiling reports.
