The City of Salem is currently hiring for a Street Maintenance Concrete Laborer to work in the Public Works Department.

Learn and grow:
The Laborer position is an entry level position within the Concrete Section of the Street Maintenance Operations Group. Through our internal development process our employees receive opportunities to obtain a CDL, safety training, traffic control training, and trade skill training that over time will open the doors to compete for other positions within the Group such as:
  • Public Works Maintenance Operator I
  • Public Works Maintenance Operator II
  • Public Works Crew Leader
  • Public Works Project Leader
What you will do:
As a Laborer within the Street Maintenance group, you will join a team to serve the citizens of the City of Salem by assisting with the maintenance of the City of Salem's transportation network. Work involves patching and grinding hazards within the pedestrian network, as well as the removal and replacement of concrete. Duties will include driving a truck, towing a trailer(s), operating stump grinders, concrete grinders, breaking up and removing damaged sidewalks, curbs, ADA ramps, or driveway aprons, removing debris, excavating, compacting subbase, building forms, landscaping, pouring, and finishing concrete. This position assists and supports the crews the street operations during snow, ice, and other emergency events.

  • Work Schedule:
    • September through April Monday through Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm
    • May through August Tuesday through Friday 6:00am -4:30pm

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check and physical exam.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and have a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards.
  • One year general maintenance, repair, or construction experience in street right-of- way, public works facilities, utility systems, and public improvements (preference will be given to experience in specific area of assignment), or any combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
  • High School graduate or G.E.D. preferred.

The Urban Renewal Agency and the Salem Housing Authority are separate municipal corporations. The Agency contracts with the City for services and the Authority is led by the Housing Administrator within the Urban Development department.
