The City of Salem is currently hiring for a Maintenance Operator II position to work in the Public Works Department, Sanitary Collection System Maintenance Unit.

What you will do:
The Maintenance Operator II in the Wastewater Collections Maintenance Group performs skilled maintenance work, both manually and using various construction equipment involved in new construction, repair, and maintenance of the wastewater collection system.

Examples of Work Performed:
Maintenance and Repair:

  • Install new, and replace existing, wastewater infrastructure including manholes, cleanouts, mainlines, and laterals.
  • Work in deep excavations for extended periods of time.
  • Setup work zone traffic control systems.
  • Install, repair, and maintain air/vacuum relief valves.
  • Install new service taps.
  • Work in manholes and other confined spaces for extended periods of time.
  • Install various types of shoring per tabulated data meeting OR-OSHA excavation safety requirements.
  • Enter data into asset management software.
  • Assist in lining sewer mains.
Equipment Operation:
  • Routinely operate small and medium construction equipment such as dump trucks, truck/trailer combinations, loaders, forklifts, hydro-cleaners, backhoe, excavators, and other equipment unique to wastewater collection system maintenance and construction.
  • Routinely use other tools and equipment such as compressors, tap machines, generators, jackhammers, compactors, chippers, gas powered cutoffs, etc. connected with work assignments.
  • Operate CCTV inspection equipment in wastewater collection system noting deficiencies.
  • Excavate wastewater infrastructure in congested areas using backhoes and excavators.
  • Safely and accurately load rock, dirt, asphalt, concrete, and miscellaneous construction debris into dump trucks from excavated trenches and stock piles using backhoes, excavators, articulated loaders and front-end loaders.
  • Load and secure large equipment including; backhoes, excavators, loaders, rollers, graders, and other similar heavy equipment onto equipment trailers and transport to work sites.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Position schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm. Call back, standby and overtime may be required on a rotating basis.

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check, drug test (including marijuana), and physical abilities exam.
  • Must have an Oregon Commercial Driver license (CDL) and have a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards.
  • Two years general maintenance, repair, paving, or construction experience in street right-of- way, street maintenance, public works facilities, utility systems, and public improvements. Preference will be given to experience in operating a backhoe or excavator in public construction or maintenance projects; or any combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skill and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.

What you will bring along:
  • Wastewater Collection System Operator certification is preferred, not required.
