The City of Gresham is pursuing experienced applicants for a Deputy Fire Marshal 1 or Fire Inspector vacancy in the Gresham Fire Department. There is one full-time, regular status vacancy available and placement will be determined based on qualifications and/or experience of the selected candidate. This job posting may also be used to fill a full-time, limited-duration Fire Inspector position.

Fire Inspector salary: $86,090 - $108,473 annually
Deputy Fire Marshal 1 salary: $90,189 - $119,320 annually

Salary placement will be based on the selected candidate's education, experience and certification as they relate to the position.

What you will get to do:

  • Participates in a variety of special programs, including fireworks prevention, juvenile fire setter, hazardous materials, and others; provides training and information related to assigned programs and actively enforces laws and regulations; collaborates with other organizations to develop fire safety programs and activities, including fire drills, evacuations, and employee training; conducts fire prevention education programs at schools, daycare centers, healthcare facilities, neighborhood groups, and others; develops, prepares, and disseminates news releases and public education materials regarding fire prevention programs, department activities, acts of heroism, special events, and others.

  • Performs inspections of building plans, construction in progress, and existing buildings to ensure safety and code compliance; documents findings, issues orders for correction, and prepares reports.

  • Responds to complaints about faulty fire alarms, fireworks, and other hazardous conditions and materials; responds on fire calls such as fire alarm activation, illegal burning, smoke investigations, and others; coordinates or performs fire investigation activities to determine cause of the fire; investigates, documents, and assists in the prosecution of arson cases; prepares records and reports of activities, incidents, inspections, and others.

  • Represents the City and assigned department to the public, other agencies, government jurisdictions, the news media, committees, and organizations; develops and makes formal presentations, conducts community outreach, and responds to requests for information.

  • Analyzes and reviews federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures in order to ensure compliance; conducts research and analysis on fire prevention best practices and trends and formulates recommendations.

  • May perform firefighting duties and responsibilities.

  • Performs a broad range of duties and is fully trained in the scope of duties assigned

  • Works independently, applies well-developed subject knowledge, and exercises judgment and initiative

  • Receives assistance as new or unusual situations are encountered and receives occasional instruction from a higher-level classification

  • Has sufficient knowledge of work unit operating procedures and policies to be able to interpret them as they apply to assigned duties

  • Applies theory to create new procedures or provide input on new policies

  • Work is reviewed based on compliance, appropriateness, and effectiveness in meeting goals and deadlines

  • Works under general supervision

  • May provide technical and functional oversight of lower-level classifications

We are seeking someone who is self-directed, organized, and has the propensity to manage multiple priorities which may require the ability to transition from one task to another as needed. In this role, you will use your effective communication skills to establish and maintain positive collaborative working relationships with various stakeholders in the community and internally. You will represent the City of Gresham and Gresham Fire in public environments to conduct and coordinate City fire prevention activities.


Minimum Qualifications:

Fire Inspector:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.

  • Up to 1 year of fire service, inspection and/or investigation experience

  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Investigator certificate or International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) Fire Investigation Technician (FIT) certificate is required within 12 months of hire.

  • Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) Fire & Life Safety Recognition Oregon Fire Inspector 1 certificate is required within 6 months of hire.

  • Valid driver's license

  • Good driving record (based on our driving matrix described below)

Deputy Fire Marshal 1:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.

  • 3 years of related experience

  • International Code Council (ICC) Fire Plans Examiner certificate is required.

  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Investigator certificate or International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) Fire Investigation Technician (FIT) certificate is required.

  • Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) Fire & Life Safety Recognition Oregon Fire Inspector 2 certificate is required.

  • Oregon Inspector Certificate (OIC) or equivalent is required within 12 months of hire.

  • Valid driver's license

  • Good driving record (based on our driving matrix described below)

This role will be assigned to the on call Fire Investigation rotation. The applicant will need to live within 30 minutes of the response area.


DRIVING MATRIX: You will be disqualified from this process if you possess any of the following driving infractions:

  • A major traffic offense or accident that results in death or major injury.

  • Driving under the influence (DUI) offense within the last 5 years.

  • Have more than 3 moving violations within a 3-year period or more than 2 within a one-year period.

  • Have more than 2 accidents within a 3-year period.
