The City of Gresham is excited to announce an entry-level opportunity in the Watershed Division as a Public Utility Worker 1. This role utilizes power and hand tools to help perform maintenance and construction on over 240 miles of storm pipe and 9,600 inlets within Gresham city limits. This position is also responsible for maintenance of Watersheds green assets such as ponds, ditches, swales, rain gardens and others.
What you will get to do:
- Perform vegetation work
- Maintain vegetated facilities to include: ponds, swales, stormwater planters, regional facilities, and others
- Utilize a variety of tools and equipment such as weed trimmers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, mowers, and other tools
- Conduct traffic control and flagging as needed
- Enter data and findings into the City’s asset management system.
- Maintain Stormwater infrastructure
- Assist Public Utility Worker 2’s with inspections, cleaning, and removal of debris from Stormwater collection systems to include mainlines, laterals, manholes, and vegetated facilities
- Enter cleaning data and discoveries into the City’s asset management system
- Conduct construction repairs
- Assist Public Utility Worker 2’s with construction, repair and maintenance of Stormwater facilities.
- Operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment and ensure public safety by preventing blockages and flooding
- Assist with use of the Vac truck to hydro excavate around utilities
- Assist with use of excavators, backhoes, and loaders for sediment removal from detention ponds and swales.
- Perform traffic control
- Engage in traffic control and flagging duties as needed to perform work
- Pesticide Application
- Apply herbicides to control unwanted weeds
- Learn and recognize basic plant identification
- Obtain pesticide applicator license
- Additional tasks may include:
- Attending job-related trainings
- Read and respond to email messages
- Attend meetings
- Purchase supplies
- Participate in monthly shop cleanup activities
- Tract and enter time and attendance for work completed
- Work after hours on over-time as needed

Work schedule/environment:
Work schedule will consist of 4 days per week for 10 hours each day with a 30-minute lunch either Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Up to one year of related work experience
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Valid Driver's License
- Good driving record (according to our driving matrix below)
Required licenses and certifications:
- Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) Pesticide applicators license is required within 6 months of hire
- CPR/AED and First Aid certification is required within 6 months of hire.
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Confined Space certification is required within 6 months of hire.
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Competent Person certification is required within 6 months of hire.
- Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) Flagger certification is required within 6 months of hire.
DRIVING MATRIX: You will be disqualified from this process if you possess any of the following driving infractions:
- A major traffic offense or accident that results in death or major injury.
- Driving under the influence (DUI) offense within the last 5 years.
- Have more than 3 moving violations within a 3-year period or more than 2 within a one- year period.
- Have more than 2 accidents within a 3-year period.
