Job Title: Residential Security Specialist

FLSA: Non Exempt

Department: ORR – Downtown

Reports To: RSS Supervisor

Salary: $19.56/hr. - $21.57/hr. (Bilingual Spanish - $21.32/hr. - $23.51/hr.)
Shift timings: Monday through Thursday from 3 pm to 1:30 am.

Job Purpose:

 

Works a fixed post position in the Facility Central Control Area of the program; monitors movement of staff with youth throughout the facility, via security video and radio communication. Responsible for duties associated with the safety and security of residents and staff, and assists Youth Care Workers with some clerical aspects.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitors movement of workers and youth within the facility, efficiently communicates with on duty staff regarding locations and movements of youth, may assign staff to areas of need as necessary. Maintains informed of youth run risk levels and safety plans.
  • Maintain safety and security of the physical infrastructure by performing routine and random security duties.
  • Operates communication equipment including closed circuit video, staff radios, and maintains surveillance of all occupied areas.
  • Issues staff radios and maintains key accountability.
  • Informs on duty staff via radio communication of any safety and security issues while preventing and detecting security breaches. Intervene and report on any remarkable unauthorized behaviors of the residential population.
  • Maintains Daily Activity Communication Log, Shift Summary and other required documentation. Monitors transitions, allows all entry and movement of youth.
  • Provides shift briefing to on-coming shift.
  • Ascertains, at the start of shift with off-going staff, that (a) communication board is correct; (b) daily documentations are correct
  • Assists with intakes as required.
  • Performs other assigned tasks as required.

 

Core Competencies:

  • Knowledge and/or ability to learn Control Room audio-visual equipment;
  • Ability to maintain composure and professional boundaries in chaotic situations; ability to effectively diffuse or de-escalate potentially volatile situations with clients and/or visitors.
  • Ability to keep accurate records;
  • Ability to follow oral and written directives;
  • Availability to work on any of the seven days of the week; availability to work any shift of the day, including, but not limited to, Swing, or Early Morning, or both;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally, and in writing,
  • Base knowledge of program policy and procedure, including the importance of safety and security in a residential setting.

 

Education and Work Experience:

  • At least 21 years of age;
  • High School or equivalent Diploma;
  • At least one year of experience working with youth, preferably in a monitored or highly-secured, residential facility
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office

 

Valued Skills and Experience:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Experience working in a secure/detention center setting or loss prevention
  • Criminal justice coursework

 

Other Requirements:

  • Pass a criminal history background check though Morrison and a suitability determination investigation through the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. For further information review :  https://www.opm.gov/suitability/suitability-and-credentialing-faqs/  
  • Proof of Vaccination (MMR, Varicella, DTap & Influenza annually)
  • TB test within 30 days of employment 
  • Bloodborne pathogen training first day of employment. 
  • Meet agency driving requirements 
  • Travel between program locations 
  • CPR/First Aid certification within 30 days of hire and kept current 
  • If bilingual in Spanish, must pass a language proficiency testing
  • All other applicable trainings as required with necessary updates and reoccurrences 

 

Physical demands and work environment; 

  • Ability to perform physical restraints of clients up to 200 pounds.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases which can encompass a variety of illnesses and infections, including tuberculosis, Hepatitis A, B and C, infectious meningitis, and HIV.
  • Overtime and emergency coverage may be required outside of normal assigned shift hours.
  • May require ability to respond to physically aggressive youth who engage in impulsive and unpredictable behavior.
  • Treatment setting could include but not limited to class room day treatment, shelter, staff secure residential or secure residential.
