Are you a detail-oriented billing professional with a passion for service and accuracy? The Salem Fire Department is currently seeking an EMS Billing Specialist to join our dedicated EMS Division. This is a vital role responsible for ensuring timely, accurate billing and reimbursement for emergency medical services. Your work will directly support our mission of saving lives and delivering high-quality emergency care to our community.

Learn and grow: The EMS Billing Specialist performs complex administrative, technical, and analytical tasks related to EMS billing operations. You'll be responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local billing regulations while also driving process improvements in revenue cycle operations. This is a professional-level position that requires a deep understanding of EMS billing codes, financial analysis, and medical claims systems.
 
What you will do:
  • Review EMS run reports and electronic patient care records for completeness and compliance.
  • Accurately code EMS services
  • Prepare and submit claims to Medicare, Medicaid, private insurers, and third-party payers.
  • Assist with billing data, identify trends, and assist with financial and audit reports.
  • Follow up on unpaid, denied, or rejected claims
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, CMS, OHA, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate across departments (Finance, IT, Compliance) to improve billing systems and revenue cycle.
  • Provide excellent customer service to patients and insurance providers.
  • Support the EMS Division with budget monitoring, internal audits, policy development, and performance reporting.
  • Work closely with analyst, accounts receivable and billing contracts

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Have an Active Class C or higher, driver's license and a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in business administration, public administration or a related field; and two (2) years of professional experience in administrative, financial, or billing analysis—preferably in a healthcare or EMS setting; or any combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screening (including marijuana).

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with EMS billing systems and familiarity with applicable codes and regulations highly preferred.
