The City of Salem is seeking a qualified Deputy City Surveyor to join our Community Planning and Development Department. In this vital role, you will play an essential part in shaping the city’s growth and development by collaborating across departments, ensuring effective communication, and optimizing the use of personnel. What you will do:
- Collaborate with the City Surveyor to manage and execute land development projects and City Improvement Projects.
- Lead multiple projects with responsibility for supervision, quality control, and ensuring work aligns with professional standards.
- Provide leadership to professional and technical staff at lower levels, offering mentoring and fostering growth within the team.
- Manage the city’s surveying tasks, including reviewing boundary descriptions, subdivision plats, and land records.
- Provide technical expertise across a range of survey-related issues, helping solve challenges related to land ownership, right-of-way, easements, and city regulations.
Additional information on job responsibilities:
- Serve as Interim City Surveyor when the City Surveyor is unavailable.
- Review and affix the professional seal to survey documents, including boundary descriptions, plats, and deeds prepared by or for the City.
- Evaluate and manage assigned staff, fostering a productive, collaborative, and high-performance environment.
- Offer technical guidance and support for City Capital Improvement Projects.
- Review and ensure the quality and accuracy of survey-related documentation.

- The position schedule is Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Our team follows a hybrid schedule working in-office 1457 23rd St SE 3 days a week and remotely for the rest with manager approval. This is subject to change based on business needs.

What are the minimum qualifications?
- Must pass the pre-employment background check.
- Must have an Oregon Driver license and have a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in surveying or civil engineering, and five years of related experience including progressively responsible managerial experience in surveying, or any combination of education, experience, and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
- Registration as a Professional Land Surveyor by the State of Oregon required (must have the ability to obtain certification during probationary period within 6 months of hire and maintain during course of employment.)
