JOB TITLE: Medical Assistant Student - Pathway Program
SUPERVISOR: Director of Nursing/Clinical Nurse Educators
HRS/WK: 40hrs - Target start date is 4/21/2025

PRIMARY FUNCTION: As a student in the MA pathway program, you will be responsible for learning and applying both clinical and administrative tasks as you prepare to work in primary care or a specialized medical setting as a Certified Medical Assistant. In this position you will learn in a supervised environment as you progress through a combination of online courses, skills labs and clinical rotations. Duties include assisting a licensed independent practitioner (LIP) in the treatment and management of TPC patients. You will function as a care team member along with RNs, LPNs, Mas and other ancillary staff.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (*ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)
Complete the training program with a combination of online courses, hands-on skills labs, and clinical rotations. The program is estimated to take up to 16 weeks. Student Pathway program is classified as a temporary position, but upon successful completion, student will be considered for regular employment as a Medical Assistant upon commitment to a 2-year service agreement with The Portland Clinic (more on this below).

Following completion of the didactic training program, you will complete an externship in an assigned department*.
- Completion of the externship, up to 160 hours.
- Completion of NHA review materials.
- Complete and pass NHA certification exam.

EXTERNSHIP DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare patients for exams or treatment by proper set-up of the exam/treatment room and rooming the patient utilizing The Portland Clinic’s (TPC) rooming protocol, including accurate measurement of vital signs and complete documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).*
- Assist the LIP as needed with diagnostic and/or surgical procedures and exams specific to the department. This may include but is not limited to the following: assisting and set up with in-office procedures, and gynecological exams.*
- Clean exam and procedure rooms throughout the day as required by OSHA and as needed.*
- Manage a desk in both an individual and group setting by scheduling patients, computer data entry, In Basket management including but not limited to the following: patient call back messages, MyChart messages, results, referral messages/work queue, staff messages, processing prior authorizations and other items outlined by the department. Also, the management of incoming and outgoing phone calls, proper documentation within the EHR, following TPC and HIPAA guidelines, and monitoring provider and clinical support schedules (and other schedules as needed by the branch/department). *
- Clean and prepare instruments for autoclaving following OSHA and TPC guidelines/policies for the prevention of the spread of bloodborne pathogens, properly using safety and personal protective equipment (PPE).*
- Clean and organize shared work areas including exam rooms, nursing station, utility rooms and supply areas, maintaining accurate documentation in logbooks/checklists as required.*
- Participate as an active care team member in a patient-centered medical home.
- Assist/float to other departments as requested by supervisor or management.*
- Comply with HIPAA and OSHA guidelines at all times to ensure patient and staff safety.*
- Employees will not be discourteous or disrespectful to customers or any member of the public while in the course and scope of company business. *
- Other duties as assigned. *
EQUIPMENT USED:
- Stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, watch with second hand, computer, phone, printer, fax, and department specific equipment. Scrubs are required but not provided by TPC.
REQUIREMENTS:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Obtain CPR certification within 2 weeks of hire (cost covered by the clinic).
- Acquire the necessary program equipment, including stethoscope, scrubs and watch with second hand, at your own expense.
- Commit to a 2-year service agreement with repayment terms should you not complete the program or complete the full 2-year duration of the agreement.
