JOB TITLE: Coding Specialist - Surgical

SUPERVISOR: Business Services Manager

HOURS PER WEEK: 40hrs/Non-Exempt 

DEPARTMENT: Coding

HIRING BONUS: $1,000 after 90 days 

PRIMARY FUNCTION: To maintain current knowledge and certification of all coding procedures, in order to audit charts and clinician documentation and be able to train staff and physicians accordingly.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (* Essential Functions) 
1. Code and review complicated encounters, including: E/M, office procedures, surgical procedures, and modifier coding. 
2. Consistently meet work queue metrics and goals as set by administration.*
3. Gather information regarding denials and recurring coding problems to give feedback to particular providers and the Business Office.*
4. Train, educate, and communicate coding matters with providers on a regular basis.
5. Work closely with the Business Office on day-to-day issues to help resolve any coding and billing disputes.  Communicate decisions with Business Office staff so they can forward findings to necessary internal parties as necessary.
6. Participate in regular meetings with the IT team, Business Office, and Compliance Specialist.
7. Attend coding education webinars, conferences and meetings, as directed by Supervisor, to maintain all applicable CEU requirements.
8. Keep current on Medicare and other insurance coding regulations to ensure all standards are met and share information to appropriate parties.
9. Employees will not be discourteous or disrespectful to a customer or any member of the public while in the course and scope of company business.
10. Work in a cooperative manner with management/supervision, coworkers, customers and vendors.

REQUIREMENTS:
Possess certification or achieve AAPC or AHIMA certification within 1 year of employment 
Surgical coding experience

EDUCATION/LICENSES PREFERRED:
High School Diploma or equivalent
