Department Overview

Posting Summary and Work Unit Description The purpose of this position is to supervise, schedule, and develop EVS staff to meet the needs of patients, visitors, and staff. Key Responsibilities This position is responsible for providing direct supervision over EVS Technicians, assigning work, developing staff schedules, addressing patient and visitor requests, ensuring the completion of work to the standard, and ensuring excellence in maintaining a clean, safe, orderly, and attractive patient care environment. In addition, this position is charged with upholding the mission of the department and organization through continuous improvement.

Function/Duties of Position

Operations

  • Manages and supervises departmental staff by confirming, validating, and teaching staff to uphold the department mission: provide an exceptional patient experience; ensure a clean environment that does not contribute to the spread of healthcare-associated infection; and to facilitate timely patient flow.
  • Ensures staffing assignments are complete to avoid missed assignments and/or unnecessary use of premium pay.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the hospital bed tracking system (Epic) and ensures response times are met.
  • Manages staffing and the operations to allow for breaks and lunches that are consistent with Oregon Law, OHSU policy, and applicable collective bargaining agreements.
  • Ensures accurate timekeeping for staff.
  • Demonstrates strong team player skills and the ability to work harmoniously with a diverse workforce. 
  • Manages and maintain pager and closet keys controls for the department shift.
  • Maintains employee records per OHSU policy.

Quality & Safety

  • Provides a safe environment for patient care.
  • Ensures staff compliance with standard work by reviewing and confirming consistently.
  • Rounds on EVS staff, nurse managers, and key internal customers daily.
  • Provides in servicing equipment, chemicals, and standards.
  • Inspects room cleanliness upon discharge per departmental expectations.
  • Follows up on patient safety incident reports per organizational expectations.
  • Ensures all staff comply with departmental policies, training, and procedures.
  • Monitors and audits equipment for cleanliness and proper set up: chemicals labeled, solutions adequately dispensed; and tools cleaned and properly stored on cart.
  • Ensure staff have the necessary tools and supplies to successfully perform their duties.
  • Submits work orders for maintenance repairs, as needed.
  • Attends all departmental meetings.

Staff Engagement

  • Assists in creating an employment environment that supports a knowledgeable, passionate, productive, safe, and engaged staff.
  • Develops one one-on-one rapport and professional relationships with all direct reports.
  • Assists department management with hiring staff.
  • Responsible for delivery and documentation of performance management: evaluations, recognition, coaching and progressive discipline.
  • Provides training, coaching, and instruction on department changes.
  • Assists with New Employee Orientation.
  • Swiftly identifies and resolves interpersonal conflict.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • 5 years of lead or supervisory experience; OR
  • 2 years of lead or supervisory experience with an Associate’s degree; OR
  • 1 year of lead or supervisory experience with a Bachelor’s degree.

Job Related Knowledge and Skills:

  • Customer service focus Proficient skills in English language: reading, writing, verbal
  • Ability to manage, prioritize, and follow through all assigned tasks
  • Ability to self-manage Computer skills: Word, Excel, Outlook, ability to learn and operate various software programs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree
  • CHEST Certification
  • Lead or supervisory experience in a hospital setting.
  • Experience in Environmental Services, Housekeeping, or Custodial Services.
  • Experience in a high volume customer service environment.

Job Related Knowledge and Skills:

  • Epic experience Previous experience in performance improvement tools such as lean, continuous quality improvement, etc.
  • Experience in academic healthcare or other matrix organizations
  • Experience in union environment

Additional Details

This position operates in a busy, noisy healthcare environment with many interruptions, multiple demands and people interactions. Staff work in areas where diseases, germs, and body fluids are present. Following proper procedures, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment, when required, is necessary for personal safety and the safety of others.
