Multnomah County’s Office of County Attorney is actively seeking an Assistant County Attorney to undertake a docket of litigation and general advisory work. If you have a demonstrated interest in representing and advising large government, institutional or corporate clients, and have the flexibility to serve multiple agencies inside a large organization on a variety of topics, we welcome your application!

As an Assistant County Attorney  - Litigation and Advisory Attorney with Multnomah County's Office of the County Attorney, you will be a part of the County's in-house legal team. 

 

As a litigation generalist, you will represent the County in all aspects of litigation from initial case analysis, responsive pleadings, discovery, motion practice, and trial and appeals in the courts and before administrative tribunals. Areas of case work will include torts, federal civil rights actions, employment actions, contract actions, property tax appeals, and other matters in which the County or its officers, employees, or agents are parties. 

 

Advisory assignments to include Animal Services and county-wide public records programming. 

Advisory responsibilities include: drafting resolutions and ordinances; interpreting and applying federal and State statutes, administrative rules, and County code; interpreting and advising on contracts; drafting, amending, and negotiating contracts and intergovernmental agreements; advising on dispute resolutions, claims, and litigating cases that arise from assigned client representatives.   

 

Additional duties as assigned include public meetings, restrictions on political campaigning, sustainability, environmental regulations, and all other aspects of County governance.

Highest quality legal work, strong work ethic, ability to work independently and as an effective member of a legal team, and intellectual curiosity emphasized. 

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to represent the County in a variety of

complex legal areas with minimal direction and supervision. They have the ability to utilize problem solving and innovation to provide creative options to help clients achieve their goals. The position requires the highest quality legal work, a strong work ethic, the ability to work as an effective member of a legal team, and intellectual curiosity.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Law degree from an accredited college or university;
  • Four (4) years of litigation and trial experience;
  • Current membership of Oregon State Bar, and ability to be admitted to practice in Oregon State Court; certified to practice in U.S. District Courts for the State of Oregon and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals; and
  • Ability to pass a professional reference check.
