The Oregon Zoo is looking for a Custodial Manager. This position plays a pivotal role in ensuring a clean and welcoming environment for all guests and staff. The primary focus of this role involves; providing leadership, planning, organization, and supervision for custodial operations, coupled with support for the Business Operations management team in daily operations. With advanced technical knowledge in custodial operations, staff, and budget management, you will oversee a dedicated team, fostering a culture that values diversity and thrives on excellence. As a key member of the Business Operations management team, flexibility is crucial as the position requires working weekends and evenings. As the Custodial Manager your position:

  • Inspire and lead a diverse custodial team, setting clear goals and expectations to uphold high sanitation standards across the zoo while contributing directly to its broader mission.
  • Establish and support a self-directed team structure, ensuring staff are equipped to maintain high standards and operate effectively even in your absence.
  • Design and manage daily operations, developing effective custodial plans and adjusting workflows to ensure seamless, efficient service.
  • Champion safety and training, creating and delivering hands-on safety programs that empower staff and maintain a secure, compliant workplace.
  • Take ownership of scheduling and team coordination, making real-time decisions that keep things running smoothly—especially during peak times and special events.
  • Play a key role in team development, overseeing hiring, promotions, and performance management while fostering a culture of respect, accountability, and growth.
  • Drive performance excellence, providing regular coaching and feedback to help team members grow and succeed.
  • Collaborate across departments, partnering with the zoo operations, facilities, and events teams to ensure custodial services align with the zoo’s high standards and visitor expectations.
  • Manage budget and contracts with strategic insight, overseeing purchasing, vendor relationships, and spending, while building a respectful, inclusive workplace culture and delivering outstanding service—even in emergencies.

  • Advanced technical knowledge and skill in operating and instructing on using custodial equipment.

  • Proven track record in developing and implementing agency wide goals, practices, and policies.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and oversee assigned work programs, monitor work schedules and evaluate the work of others.

  • Knowledgeable about effective leadership strategies to promote an inclusive environment.

  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local compliance policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.

  • Possesses clear communication skills and demonstrates proficiency in conveying departmental policies and procedures verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to prepare complex written reports, procedures, and materials.

  • Proactively solves problems, conducts research and analysis, and presents well-reasoned recommendations for optimal solutions.

  • Expertise in cost estimation for supplies and equipment, coupled with a keen eye for researching and implementing innovative service delivery methods.

TO QUALIFY

Minimum Requirements

  • Some specialized knowledge and training beyond the high school level in the function or responsibility that is to be supervised and

  • Three years of directly related experience and Two years of supervisory experience; or

  • Any combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.

Possession of or ability to obtain:

  • Current valid driver's license OLCC Server's permit

  • Multnomah County Food Handler's Certificate

Work environment and schedule: Given the role's onsite leadership responsibilities, the ideal candidate should be adaptable to a flexible schedule, encompassing weekends, holidays, and occasional early mornings or evenings, as dictated by business operations. Extended hours and workweeks exceeding 40 hours may be necessary due to operational needs.

  • Previous experience working in a union an environment.
  • Previous experience with creating and maintaining a team structure that is self-directed.

COMPENSATION, BENEFITS AND REPRESENTATON

 

The full-salary range for this position is step 1: $84,726.66 annually to step 7: $113,541.16 annually. However, unless a candidate’s qualifications justify, based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act requirements and Metro’s internal equity review process, the appointment will likely be made between step 1: $84,726.66 annually to the equity range step 3 $93,411.09 annually.

 

This position is not eligible for overtime and is not represented by a union. It is classified as a Service Supervisor III.
