The Mission of the agency is to serve “Oregon's recreational boating public through education, enforcement, access and environmental stewardship for a safe and enjoyable experience.” The Boating Safety Advocate positions are part of the Boating Safety Program team, whose general purpose is to provide education and outreach to reduce recreational boating incidents and fatalities statewide.

 

The primary purpose of this position is to interact with boaters on the water, shore, and in the community to enhance boating safety. The 2025 Season is expected to last from April 21st through October  17th.

 

Duties include:

  • Engage with boaters to enhance boating safety messaging by integrating new creative approaches with our existing education and outreach programs. 

  • Works to create partnerships by engagement and outreach with local schools, organizations, nonprofits, and other community groups to promote boating and water safety education.

  • The individual will work within their region of operation to engage the public at schools, safety fairs and other community gatherings, teach boating safety, and coordinate with area marine law enforcement when appropriate.

  • Collect informal field data related to the waterbody, type of boater, type of education and interaction details as needed by the Marine Board and monitor local boating activities for safety and compliance.

  • Work as a team with the Boating Safety Staff in developing and delivering focused, relevant, and effective messaging to recreational boaters of all types.

  • Work with agency staff to create outreach and education engagement activities aimed at users who are new to boating. Will work to deliver water safety education such as use of life jackets, pertinent safety equipment, risks associated with cold water, boating rules and regulations, and environmental stewardship principles. Education and materials may be distributed at launch ramps, marinas, events, and on-the-water by the individual.

  • The individual may operate boats when participating in education and outreach events.

What We Are Looking For

Minimum Qualifications:

Two years of experience in customer service that included:

  • One year of which must have included explanation of rules, regulations, and policies.

  • One year of which must have included responsibility for dealing with unique or unusual situations.

 

 

Desired Attributes:

  • Passionate about boating and water safety.

  • Experience in community engagement, education, and outreach.

  • A broad-based knowledge of boating safety and knowledge of the geography of Oregon.

  • Proficiency in Word, Outlook, Adobe, and PowerPoint.
