Nonprofit/Estate Planning Associate

Tonkon Torp LLP, a prominent, full-service firm in Portland, Oregon, is looking for a junior attorney to join its Estate Planning and Nonprofit Practice Group.  The candidate will report to the Co-Chairs of the Business Department and the Chair of the Nonprofit Organizations Practice Group.

The qualified candidate will have demonstrated interest, experience and skills as follows:

  • Demonstrated interest in nonprofit, charitable, or mission-driven work.
  • Experience with charitable giving strategies, nonprofit governance, and federal and state tax-exempt organization regulations is preferred but not required.
  • An LLM or coursework in trust, estate planning, and nonprofit law is beneficial.
  • Strong drafting, organizational, research, and analytical skills, with an attention to detail.
  • Ability to prepare a wide range of legal documents.
  • High level of professionalism and integrity.
  • Ability to analyze complex legal concepts and manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Natural curiosity and enthusiasm for new challenges.
  • Excellent client relationship and presentation skills, with an ability to clearly explain legal concepts.
  • Oregon and/or Washington State Bar admission or eligibility for immediate reciprocity (required)
  • J.D. and strong academic record from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Proficiency in legal research software and Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research and advise clients on federal and state estate, gift and generation-skipping tax.
  • Advise clients on all aspects of estate planning, including wealth transfer strategies, charitable planning, wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, powers of attorney, and advance healthcare directives.
  • Draft comprehensive estate planning documents tailored to client needs and objectives.
  • Assist with formation of nonprofit organizations, including drafting articles, bylaws, and initial governance documents.
  • Prepare and file federal and state tax-exemption applications and other tax forms related to charitable compliance.
  • Advise nonprofit clients on all matters related to state and federal tax-exemption compliance.
  • Draft and review charitable gift agreements, donor-advised fund agreements, and planned giving instruments.
  • Manage trust and estate administration, including probate proceedings, trust funding, and estate and gift tax returns.
  • Coordinate with accountants, financial advisors, and other professionals.
  • Participate in business development, community outreach, and nonprofit engagement as appropriate.
