At a Glance! The Early Learning Center (ELC) is a high quality childcare facility that serves the children of Lower Columbia College faculty, staff, and students, and the community. ELC teachers are a child-centered group with a passion in early childhood.

We are looking for someone who shares the same passion in early childhood and is a self-motivated, team player. This position must be able to communicate effectively with parents, peers, and children and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

The Mentor Teacher is responsible for supervising up to 20 children including all classroom activities, meal times, lesson planning, on-going assessments as well as meeting with families for parent teacher conferences and family night activities. In addition to classroom activities, the Mentor Teacher will be responsible for mentoring ECED (Early Childhood Education) clinical students, tracking attendance, giving feedback on performance, and quarterly conferences. This position works closely with families, community partners, and other staff members.

This position is an 11.5 month, 40 hours/week position. The classification is Early Childhood Program Specialist 3. The Mentor Teacher reports directly to the Director of the ELC. The typical schedule is 7:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Lower Columbia College is accepting applications for an Early Childhood Specialist 3 (ECPS 3) in our Early Learning Center. This is an open-competitive recruitment for all qualified applicants. The successful applicant will provide education instruction to meet the needs of children enrolled in an Early Childhood Program. Duties may include but not limited to the following:


Examples of Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Functions

  • Supervise children, teaching assistants, work study/student help employees and ECED students in the educational activities.
  • Assess the social, intellectual, emotional, nutritional, and physical needs of children enrolled in the program; develops child and adult directed educational activities based on assessed needs.
  • Implement research-based curriculum
  • Plan curriculum, prepare materials, and present activities appropriate for the ages and developmental stages of children in the classroom.
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Assess children's learning levels and monitor the progress of each child.
  • Consult and cooperate with state and local agencies concerning students with special needs
  • Perform quarterly conferences sharing vital information regarding children's growth and development
  • Works with and implements child care licensing requirements and regulations
  • Seek professional growth through reading, classes, videos, visits to other programs and attendance at workshops/seminars
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • AA degree in Early Childhood Education OR
  • Forty-five college credits in early childhood education and a BA in a related field such as Children's studies, human development, sociology, Psychology
  • AND two years' experience working with children of the ages enrolled in the program in a group setting.
  • Passed MERIT portable background check
  • Valid Food Handler's card
  • Valid/current Safe Sleep training
  • Must have valid certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and first aid
Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefer BA in Early Childhood or related field and previous experience
  • Competence in various curriculum areas such as music, art, science, pre-reading, storytelling, numeric fluency, and language development.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Completion of Child Care Basics
  • Passed MERIT portable background check

Physical Requirements:
Seldom:
  • in emergency situations, pick up children, up to 80 lbs. (with assistance)
  • sit for long periods of time (up to 7 hours) during mandatory trainings
Occasionally:
  • classroom arrangement including moving furniture
Frequently:
  • Stack chairs
  • bend over to pick up items and/or assist children
  • sit either on child-sized chairs or the floor
  • squat
  • extended periods of standing
  • multiple uses of bleach solution for cleaning/sanitizing classroom daily/weekly
  • maintain sight and sound supervision of up to 18 children with a co-teacher
  • during outside play
  • lift ' carrying classroom materials and children (5-25 lbs.)
  • Walk ' during outside play and off site/campus field trips
  • Care for ill or injured children
Working Conditions
  • Expected to attend evening meetings
  • Expected to attend scheduled meetings with parents/families
  • Provide supervision on regularly scheduled field trips
  • Expected to attend trainings and conferences that pertain to Early Childhood Education
Skills and Abilities
  • Competence in various curriculum areas such as music, art, science, pre-reading, storytelling, numeric fluency, and language development
  • Skilled in planning, organizing, scheduling, record keeping, classroom arrangement and management, staff and parent communications
  • Ability to relate effectively with children, families, community members and staff of diverse backgrounds.
  • Must be able to supervise children by sight and capable of moving quickly in order to prevent possible injury
