The faculty member in this position will direct the John Fryer Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory (https://aahl.microbiology.oregonstate.edu/), establish and sustain an independent research program by conducting original research in an area of microbiology related to climate change and aquatic animal health through external funding, publishing original research in peer-reviewed journals, teaching and mentoring graduate, professional, and undergraduate students; and providing institutional and professional service including service related to interdisciplinary scholarship, student success, and diversity. We are especially interested in candidates with research programs focused on bacterial or viral impacts on aquatic animal health.

The Microbiology faculty consists of 11 tenure-track professors, 7 senior research professors, 4 instructors, and 5 advisors, and trains about 950 undergraduate majors (Microbiology and BioHealth Sciences) and 40 graduate students (Microbiology). Research interests encompass studies in the biology and pathogenesis of bacteria and viruses, microbial ecology and evolution, bioinformatics, microbial interactions, and environmental microbiology. Position Description
Director of the John Fryer Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory (20%)
Oversight of the John Fryer Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory. Work closely with the facility manager to review opportunities and challenges. Recruit new users and further develop our outreach capacity to become a more visible resource
Scholarship and Research (50%)
Maintenance of an active, externally federally funded, independent research program focused on the biology and mitigation of bacterial or viral aquatic animal disease. Timely publication of research results in respected, peer-reviewed journals. Presentation of results at national and international scientific conferences and meetings. Maintenance of a research environment for training undergraduate and graduate students and post-doctoral associates.
Teaching and Advising (20%)
Participate in undergraduate teaching in areas of expertise or other aspects of microbiological and biomedical sciences, including online education. Training and advising of MS and PhD students. Direction of undergraduate students seeking research experiences. Supervise personnel in conducting research at the undergraduate, graduate, and/or postdoctoral levels.
Service (10%)
Participate on the graduate committees of students in Microbiology and allied programs. Participate in committees and faculty governance at the unit level. Participate in committees or provide other service at the college or university level. Participate in service to the profession, such as reviewing journal manuscripts and grant proposals, serving professional organizations, organizing conferences.
What you need for the position
- Ph.D. in Microbiology or related field.
- Relevant postdoctoral or postgraduate experience.
- Demonstrable proficiency or significant potential to obtain external research funding.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to scholarly activities through refereed publications in, or relevant to, microbiology.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate microbiology topics to varied audiences.
- Evidence of teaching, engagement, or research efforts that minimize barriers or consider equity and inclusion concerns.
- Tolerance for diverse ideas, including those different from one’s own.
What you need for the position at the ranks of Associate or Full Professor:
- Demonstrated ability for excellence and leadership in research.
- Demonstrated ability to attract external funding to sustain a vigorous research program.
Preferred Qualifications for all ranks (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor)
- Record of administrative or managerial experience
- Demonstrable ability or significant potential for teaching excellence and commitment to student success that benefits the graduate and undergraduate students in microbiology and biohealth sciences.
- Research emphasis in bacteriology or virology.
- Record of collaboration or cooperation within a team structure.
- Record of collaboration with industry
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
Preferred qualifications at the ranks of Associate or Full Professor:
- Demonstrated ability to attract research funding from varied sources.
