The City of Salem is hiring a part-time, Evening and Weekend Recreation Coordinator to work at Center 50+ (10-20 hours per week). We welcome everyone interested to apply!

What you will do:
Support our programs at the Center 50+, City of Salem Senior Center Building. The Evening and Weekend Recreation Coordinator position involves monitoring the Center during day, evening, and weekend hours; opening, closing, and securing the building; performing a variety of recreational, custodial, and clerical tasks; assisting building patrons, instructors, and volunteers; supporting the Director/Program Coordinator with special projects such as coordinating special programs or events; and providing back-up coverage and support to Center 50+ staff in various programs, with a primary focus on evening and weekend programming and rental support.

Additional job duties and responsibilities:
  • Assist in planning, preparing, and facilitating program activities and special events.
  • Communicate and clarify workplace policies and procedures to staff and the public. 
  • Perform a variety of duties in the Point-of-Sale System, including end of day balancing, and cash handling.
  • Support program staff support by assisting clients and caregivers during activities.
  • Serve as a substitute leader when the program coordinator assigns tasks.
  • Deliver friendly, positive, and professional customer service to all.
  • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot audio/video equipment.
  • Arrange and dismantle tables and chairs for classes, special events, and rentals functions.
  • Be calm, creative, and flexible when managing stressful or emergency situations.
Work involves leadership of a wide variety of activities, including directing recreational activities at programmed recreation sites, as well as planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating of delivered programs. 
 


Work schedule:
This is a part-time position limited to 1,200 work hours in a calendar year. The job duties of this position are primarily performed in-office at Center 50+ during our standard business hours of operation: Wednesday–Thursday, 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (varied), and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (varied). While most work is conducted at Center 50+, some duties may be performed off-site at local parks and agency partner locations as needed.

  • Salary Range: $19.47 to $24.84 an hour.

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check and drug test (including marijuana).
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must have an Oregon Driver license and have a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards, depending on area of assignment.
  • For some assignments, must pass criminal background check necessary to obtain Criminal Justice Information System clearance and Law Enforcement Data System certification within 30 days of hire (clearance must be maintained throughout employment).
  • Four years or more of advanced leadership or instructional experience, or specialized education/certification, in recreation, education, sports, gerontology, or related field, with demonstrated program development experience and training working with youth and adults in a recreational setting.

What you will bring along:
  • Experience demonstrating strong organizational skills;
  • Experience working with seniors and ability to remain calm in all circumstances;
  • Experience meeting deadlines in a timely and efficient manner;
  • Knowledge of behavior management and positive redirection techniques;
  • Experience using basic computer programs, including MS Office, MS Teams, social media platforms;
  • Experience communicating effectively with the public, coworkers, and supervisors;
  • Experience working with diverse groups of people and work cooperatively with others in a leadership role;
  • Knowledge of managing stressful or emergency situations in a calm and composed manner;
  • Experience using Point of Sale systems and registration software;
  • Experience multi-tasking and maintaining control of a room with constant interruptions and special client needs;
  • Experience working independently with minimal supervision;
  • Knowledge of responsible decision-making, with a mature and professional approach.
